Arrive
The island of Fanø lies off Esbjerg / Denmark in the North Sea. It is the second island north of Sylt. Fanø can be reached quickly via the A7/E3 motorway, Hamburg - Flensburg. When entering Denmark, all citizens of an EC country require a valid identity card. After crossing the border, continue on the E3. In the rest area just behind the border there is a "tourist information office". While you get in the mood for Denmark with your first hot dog, you can get information material and interesting tips about our northern neighbors.
At exit No. 75 behind the border, we leave the motorway and turn left towards Tønder / Ribe. Immediately after crossing the motorway, we turn right and follow the country road No. 179. The journey to Ribe takes us past neatly decorated, isolated houses and through a few small villages. If you have planned enough time for the trip, you should take a look at the town of Ribe. The old town with its cobblestone streets is worth a visit. You can enjoy a fantastic view of the city and the surrounding area from the almost 60-meter-high tower of the cathedral. Afterwards, let yourself be captivated by the atmosphere of one of the small, cozy cafes. The cakes and baked goods you get here are a poem. The route described above on No. 179 is more scenic and also shorter than other routes that lead to Ribe. From here it is only 20 to 30 minutes to Esbjerg. From over 20 kilometers away, the 250-meter-high chimney of the Esbjerg power station can be seen on the horizon of a seemingly endless plain. After arriving there after about 290 kilometers from Hamburg, it is important to orientate yourself towards the harbor ("Havn"). We leave the first turnoff to "Harwich" on the left (!) and turn left just a few hundred meters further on to the "Fanø" ferry dock. This advice seems all the more important as there have already been hang gliders who have queued for several hours for the ferry to England. If you prefer driving on the motorway, we recommend taking exit no. 68 after the border to Ribe. After leaving the motorway, follow the signs for "Gram - Ribe - Esbjerg". Follow the route in Esbjerg to the harbor as described above. From there, we take the ferry to Fanø in 12 minutes. The ferry runs every 20 minutes.
